What does it mean to be a foster?

Fostering is one of the most amazing gifts you can give to a homeless animal. It is literally LIFE SAVING. Research shows that even brief outings (around 3 hours) and temporary fostering (2 days) can increase the likelihood of a shelter animal being adopted by 500-1400% !!!! Those are some crazy numbers! And as a completely foster based rescue, fosters are the literal foundation of our rescue. Without our fosters, we would cease to exist.

But, what IS fostering? Fostering means taking in an animal (whether from the shelter, the street, or as a previous owner) and giving them a temporary home until they find their forever home. AMTR covers all costs- food, supplies, vet care, and everything else. All we ask of you is that you provide a roof over their head, some belly rubs, socialization, and unconditional love. Bonus points if you're able to provide some training!

Common reasons we hear as to why people think they cannot foster:

1- I could never foster, I would fall in love and never give the dog up! To this we implore you to think about that dog or cat sitting alone in the loud, scary shelter, facing euthanasia when they could be curled up next to you safely on the couch. Yes, we know it is so hard not to fall in love with every animal you meet and even harder thinking about giving that animal away, but think about how REWARDING it is that you helped facilitate saving that animal's life!

2. I can't afford another dog/cat. Lucky for you, fostering is COMPLETELY FREE. It does not cost you a penny!

3. I'm too young/old. There is an animal out there for everyone. We love pairing senior animals with senior people. As long as you are 21 or older (18 or older with parent's permission) you are old enough to foster!

4.I don't have the space. While a bull mastiff may not be the best fit for an apartment, our foster team will work with you to find the best fit for you and your living situation. What about a kitten? A puppy or small breed dog? We are happy to pair you with a perfect foster match!

5. I don't have the time. Yes, animals are a big commitment. But, a lot of animals are fine being home alone 8+ hours. Cats especially! If you feel like time would be an issue, we can work with you to choose an animal that would be the best fit for your life and work schedule!
